Built in Lira, Built for the World: The EriPay Story
Most fintech stories begin in a capital city. Ours began in Lira, on Onapa Road in Barogole - Weigweng. From here we saw every day how much time and money people lose moving cash around: traders travelling to Kampala with stock money in their pockets, parents sending school fees through friends, savings groups keeping cash in a metal box.
The problem we wanted to solve
Mobile money changed Uganda, but it left gaps. Each network is its own island. Small transfers carry fees that hurt people on small incomes. Saving and group contributions still happen on paper. And connecting to the global economy, whether to get paid by a client abroad or to pay for an online course, remains hard.
Our mission
We set out to build one wallet that is safe, affordable and connected to the world, and that works for everyone: a boda rider, a market vendor, a student, a growing business and the agent at the corner shop.
What we built
- Free transfers between EriPay users up to UGX 20,000.
- Deposits and withdrawals through MTN, Airtel and banks, plus a network of agents for cash.
- Savings goals and digital savings groups.
- Bill payments for electricity, water, taxes, TV and school fees.
- Multi-currency wallets, exchange and virtual cards.
- A merchant gateway with QR codes, payment links and an API.
Built for northern Uganda, ready for the world
Designing for Lira means designing for slow connections, shared phones and people who are new to digital money. That is why EriPay installs from the browser, loads fast, explains every fee in plain language and lets agents help customers at the counter. A product that works well here works well anywhere.
