Send Money Free: How EriPay's Free Transfers up to UGX 20,000 Work
Fees on small transfers add up faster than most people realise. Sending transport money to a sibling every week, chipping in for a colleague's wedding, or sending a parent something at the end of the month can easily cost tens of thousands of shillings a year in charges. That is money that should have stayed with your family.
That is why EriPay made everyday transfers between EriPay wallets free. This guide explains exactly how the fee works, with worked examples, and answers the questions people ask most.
The rule in one sentence
Sending money to another EriPay user is free up to UGX 20,000. For larger amounts the fee is 0.5% of the amount, and it is capped at UGX 1,000 no matter how much you send.
Worked examples
- Send UGX 2,000 for lunch: fee UGX 0
- Send UGX 5,000 for transport: fee UGX 0
- Send UGX 20,000 to your mother: fee UGX 0
- Send UGX 50,000 for rent share: fee UGX 250
- Send UGX 100,000 to a supplier: fee UGX 500
- Send UGX 200,000 for school fees: fee UGX 1,000 (the cap)
- Send UGX 5,000,000 for a plot of land: fee still UGX 1,000
The minimum single transfer is UGX 500. The same free amount applies in your other currency wallets, converted at the day's rate, so a US dollar transfer worth less than UGX 20,000 is free too.
How the cap protects large transfers
Percentage fees hurt most when you move big amounts: 1% of five million shillings is 50,000 shillings. On EriPay, the fee stops rising at UGX 1,000. Once you send UGX 200,000 or more, every additional shilling travels free. For people paying school fees, buying stock or settling with a supplier, that cap makes a real difference.
How a year of sending compares
Imagine a typical month: four transfers of UGX 10,000 to children at school, two of UGX 20,000 to parents, and one of UGX 150,000 for rent share. On EriPay the first six are free, and the rent share costs UGX 750. That is UGX 750 for the whole month, or UGX 9,000 for the year, for transfers worth over UGX 2.7 million.
You see everything before you confirm
When you type the recipient's phone number, email or Wallet ID, EriPay shows the name registered to that account. Check it every time. Then you see the amount, the fee and the total before you enter your 6-digit Wallet PIN. If anything looks wrong, stop: nothing moves until you confirm.
Step by step
- Open EriPay and tap Send.
- Choose the wallet to send from, usually your UGX wallet.
- Enter the phone number (07... or +256...), email address or Wallet ID.
- Check the name that appears.
- Type the amount and, if you like, a note such as "Lunch" or "Term 2 fees".
- Review the fee and total, then confirm with your PIN.
The money arrives instantly, and the recipient gets a notification.
Why EriPay can make small sends free
Transfers between EriPay wallets do not pass through a mobile network or a bank, so they cost us very little to process. We pass that saving on for everyday amounts, and earn instead on larger transfers (with a low cap), currency exchange, business payments and withdrawals to outside networks.
What about deposits and withdrawals?
EriPay adds no charge of its own when you deposit. When you deposit or withdraw through a mobile money network, a bank or another provider, that provider's charge applies, and EriPay shows it before you approve. The cheapest way to use EriPay is to keep money moving inside EriPay: get paid into your wallet, send to other EriPay users, pay bills and save, and withdraw only when you need cash or an outside account.
Getting the most from free transfers
- Bring your circle along. Free transfers only work when the people you pay are on EriPay. Share your referral link; you can earn a reward when they make their first deposit.
- Split large amounts only if it makes sense. Because the fee is capped, splitting a big transfer into many small ones rarely saves much, and it creates more records to track.
- Use notes. A short note makes your history a useful record.
- Use requests. If someone owes you, send a request instead of chasing them.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a limit to how many free transfers I can make?
The fee rule applies to each transfer: every transfer of UGX 20,000 or less is free. Your account's daily and monthly limits still apply, and they rise when you verify your identity.
Can I send to someone who is not on EriPay?
Transfers go to EriPay wallets. Invite the person first; signing up takes a few minutes and they receive a welcome bonus.
Can the fee change?
Fees can change over time, but whatever applies is always on the confirmation screen before you enter your PIN.
