Understanding Stablecoins and Crypto: Risks Before Rewards
Cryptocurrency is everywhere on social media, often promoted with promises of quick riches. Some people use digital assets responsibly; many others lose money to volatility and scams. Before you touch crypto, understand what it is and what it is not.
What is a stablecoin?
A stablecoin such as USDT is a digital token designed to keep a stable value, usually one US dollar. People use stablecoins to move value across borders or hold a dollar-linked balance. "Stable" is a goal, not a guarantee: a stablecoin depends on the company behind it.
The real risks
- Volatility: coins like Bitcoin can lose a large share of their value in days.
- Not legal tender: crypto assets are not legal tender in Uganda and are not protected like bank deposits.
- Irreversible transfers: crypto sent to the wrong address, or to a scammer, is usually gone.
- Scams: fake investment platforms, "mining" schemes and pyramid schemes are common.
Red flags of crypto scams
- Guaranteed daily or weekly returns
- Rewards for recruiting other people
- Pressure to invest quickly
- Withdrawals that require you to pay a "fee" first
- Strangers on WhatsApp or Telegram offering to trade for you
Safety rules
- Never invest money you cannot afford to lose.
- Never share passwords, PINs or recovery phrases.
- Prefer regulated, transparent services, and read their risk disclosures.
- If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
