Why EriPay Is a Game Changer for Money in Uganda
Uganda already leads the world in how quickly people adopted mobile money. Market vendors, boda riders, students and grandparents in the village all know how to send a payment from a phone. Yet most of us still juggle several apps, a SIM card for each network, cash in the pocket for small purchases, and a notebook for the savings group. Every one of those pieces costs time, money or peace of mind.
EriPay was built in Lira to bring all of it into one secure wallet that works on any smartphone or computer. This article explains, point by point, why we believe EriPay changes the game for families, traders, agents and businesses, and what that means for your money in practice.
1. Everyday transfers are free
Look at your own sending history. Most transfers are small: lunch money for a child, transport for a sibling, a contribution for a burial, a top-up for a parent. On most platforms each of those carries a fee, and the fees quietly add up to tens of thousands of shillings a year.
On EriPay, sending to another EriPay user is free up to UGX 20,000. Above that, the fee is just 0.5%, and it never goes above UGX 1,000, even if you send five million shillings. Before you confirm, you always see the fee and the recipient's registered name, so there are no surprises and fewer mistakes.
A family that sends UGX 10,000 three times a week pays nothing on EriPay. Over a year, that is more than 150 transfers that cost zero.
2. One wallet above every network
Your EriPay wallet is not tied to one telecom network. You can fund it from MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money, by bank transfer, or by handing cash to an EriPay agent. Once the money is in EriPay, an MTN customer and an Airtel customer can pay each other instantly using a phone number, an email address or a Wallet ID. When you need the money outside EriPay, you withdraw to mobile money, to your bank, or as cash at an agent.
3. Saving is built in, not bolted on
Most of us want to save, but money that sits in the same place we spend from tends to disappear. EriPay gives saving its own tools:
- Savings Goals let you name a target, such as "Term 2 school fees" or "New phone", set an amount and a date, and switch on weekly or monthly auto-save. You can lock a goal until a date, so the money cannot come out early, and turn on reminders.
- Savings Groups bring your circle, chama or VSLA online. Members contribute from their wallets, everyone sees the balance and who has paid, and payouts are released only when enough members vote to approve them. No metal box to guard, no notebook to lose.
4. Pay the bills that matter, without the queue
From your wallet you can pay Yaka (UMEME prepaid electricity), NWSC water, URA taxes with a PRN, DStv, GOtv, StarTimes and school fees through SchoolPay. The fee is shown before you pay, you are notified when the bill is settled, and Yaka tokens are sent straight to you. Every payment stays in your history as a record.
5. Agents bring digital money to every community
Not everyone lives near a bank, and not every purchase can be digital yet. EriPay agents, usually shops, kiosks and phone stalls, let you change cash into digital money and back again. They use a QR flow so you never share your PIN: you scan the agent's code to deposit cash, or scan it to withdraw. Agents can also open accounts for new customers at the counter, which matters a great deal for people who are new to smartphones. Every operation earns the agent commission, so EriPay creates income in the places it serves.
6. Connected to the world
A freelancer in Lira with a client in London, a student paying for an online exam, a trader importing goods priced in dollars: all of them need more than a shilling wallet. EriPay lets you hold several currencies side by side, exchange between them at the day's rate with the fee shown first, and create virtual cards for online shopping, subscriptions and advertising. The P2P marketplace lets users trade with each other, with funds held in escrow until both sides confirm.
7. A real payment gateway for businesses
Businesses get a full merchant toolkit: QR codes for the counter, payment links for WhatsApp and Instagram sellers, a hosted checkout and developer API with signed webhooks and a sandbox, refunds and recurring billing. Payments land in the business wallet, ready to pay suppliers or staff through bulk payouts. Keeping business money in its own wallet also makes it far easier to know whether the business is actually making a profit.
8. Security that does not get in the way
Every payment, transfer and withdrawal needs your 6-digit Wallet PIN. You can add two-factor sign-in with an authenticator app, verify your identity for higher limits, and receive an alert the moment money moves. Because EriPay shows the recipient's name before you confirm, you can catch a wrong number before it becomes a problem.
9. Built for real conditions in Uganda
EriPay installs straight from the browser, without an app store, and uses very little storage. It is built to load quickly on slow connections and works on the phones people already own. Fees are written in plain shillings, the welcome bonus is credited the moment you sign up, and help is available by support ticket, by email at info@eripays.com, or from your nearest agent.
What this means for different people
- Families send support free and save for fees with goals that cannot be touched early.
- Traders accept QR payments, avoid fake notes and keep a clear record of sales.
- Savings groups run transparently, even with members in different districts.
- Freelancers and students pay and get paid online.
- Shop owners earn commission as agents and bring more customers through the door.
